TRADITIONAL CHINESE PAPER CUTTING:
Presentation and Workshop by Peili Zhang
Paper cutting is a popular Chinese folk art form that can be traced at least as far back as the 6th century. Images are hand-carved from paper using either scissors or knives. While chiefly used for decorative purposes, paper cuts carry special significance at Chinese festivals and holidays.
Event Structure
During the first hour, Mr. Zhang will lecture on the historical background and cultural significance of Chinese paper cutting. After a short break, there will be a 1½-hour workshop where participants will have an opportunity to learn how to create their own paper cuts. English translator, materials and refreshments will be provided.
Peili Zhang
Mr. Zhang was born in northeast China, the region in which Chinese paper cutting is most highly developed. Mr. Zhang has been developing his expertise in this art form for over 40 years. Reflected in his paper cuts are the many experiences Mr. Zhang gained during the 25 years he spent traveling the world as a merchant sailor. Since his arrival in the U.S. five years ago, Mr. Zhang has shared his paper cutting techniques in many different ways, including shows, seminars, and cultural events. His work has been featured in the Boulder Daily Camera and other local newspapers. Mr. Zhang will present his art and techniques at the Academy of Chinese Martial and Cultural Arts on March 6th.
