Living in Today's China:
Recollections and Impressions of an
American Family's Year in China
John McGee
Beginning in July of 2000 and continuing for over a year, local Boulder photographer John McGee and his family lived in Guangzhou, China. Join us for a revealing multimedia presentation and exhibit of compelling and dramatic photographs recalling everyday life in today's China: the highs and lows, the good and the bad, the joy and sadness of life...
During the year the McGee family remained in China, John and his wife, Bev, taught English at South China Normal University and their children Katie - a native of Hangzhou, China - and Sarah - born in Hanoi, Vietnam - attended the local preschool. In addition to teaching, John hosted a regional television show entitled "English World". John and Bev's teaching jobs allowed ample time for them to visit parts of China outside of the city of Guangzhou.
About John McGee: John and his family have lived in Boulder for the last 13 years. During that time, John studied photography under Andy Katz and has shown locally at Barnes and Noble, NCAR, and Boulder Open Studios (2001 & 2002). He presently has photographs on display at the Academy of Chinese Martial and Cultural Arts in Boulder. John was recognized for photography at the Greeley National Arts Show (2002) and was awarded an AHAB/Addison mini grant to photograph orphanages in China. He recently returned from photographing several orphanages in east-central China and will be displaying that body of work in February of 2003.
